What is SKYWARN?
SKYWARN is a public service program that combines amateur radio operating skills with severe weather knowledge. Volunteers provide critical real-time observations and damage assessments to supplement and validate National Weather Service radar and weather instruments.
The program trains volunteer severe weather spotters through local National Weather Service Forecast Offices. Participants learn to identify severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail, and flooding. In certain regions, spotters also report snowfall and ice accumulation data.
